The Recipe for Perfect Cookbook Printing

Thinking about printing your own cookbook? It should be practical in the kitchen, but also beautiful to look at. Maybe your photos, recipes, and layout are nearly finished — but what specifications will truly bring your cookbook to life?

That is where we come in. When it comes to cookbooks, you can judge a book by its cover. A good cookbook should look inviting, but it also needs to handle the heat — literally. Cooking usually means a busy countertop, and sometimes messy hands flipping through pages. Your book needs to keep up.

Hardcover or Softcover? What Works Best for a Cookbook?

For most cookbooks, we recommend a hardcover binding. That does not mean you can not go with a softcover — but a hardcover has some clear advantages. You will always get sewn binding, which means the book opens and lies flat with ease. It also adds durability and gives your book a high-quality finish.

Besides the binding, the format of your cookbook also matters. A slightly wider layout (like 290 x 240 mm) works better than standard A4. Why? Because it helps your cookbook stay open on the counter — no more flipping pages mid-recipe.

Paper Is Key — For Looks and Function!

Your cookbook should be easy to read, but the photos of your dishes should also shine. On top of that, kitchen use means you want pages that can handle a bit of moisture and not show fingerprints too easily.

That is why we recommend coated paper — preferably a matte or silk finish. This keeps your text sharp, your photos vibrant, and your pages protected from kitchen splashes.

Also important: the thickness of the paper. You do not want see-through pages, especially when you are working with lots of images. A minimum of 130 gsm is often the way to go.

  • What does it cost to print a book?

    Printing a book is always a custom process, and the costs vary accordingly. For example, a softcover book can be printed for as little as € 0,68 per copy.   • What is the delivery time of books?

    As you might have guessed… it depends! The delivery time of your book depends on several factors. What are you hoping for in terms of book design? What type of paper or finishing do you want? As a general rule:

    • Hardcover– or softcover books without special binding or finishing can be printed within 3 to 4 weeks. In peak season (sep-dec) this might get longer.
    • Do you have additional preferences? For example foil print, embossing, or UV-Spot finish at an affordable price? Then we can also deliver your books within 3 to 4 weeks.
    • For larger print runs ( over 3,000 copies), it is smart to purchase paper in advance. This helps reduce the costs, delivery time will be around 5 to 6 weeks.

    Call us or request a quote and we can give you a better estimate of expected delivery times.

  • What can I expect in terms of quality and colorfast printing?

    We only print books on modern printing machines, and work exclusively with A-label paper. These standards ensure the highest possible end result for your books. Obviously, colorfast printing is also a high priority. We can produce color proofs to show you the expected color result before the final print run. We do not start the printing process until everyone is satisfied.

  • I have special requirements for my book. What can I expect?

    Each book is unique and everyone has their own requirements in terms of specifications, packaging and delivery. Exceptions are our specialty! We have a wide range of different types of machines at our dedicated production locations that are designed to handle exceptions. So we are happy to accept your challenge!

  • Can you help with the layout of the print files?

    Yes, we certainly can. Our designers have extensive knowledge in book design and DTP. If you are interested, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss your options and send you a personalized quote.

  • How can your prices be so competative?

    If you want to print high-quality books in a cost-effective way, you have to use the right machinery. We have various production locations where we have our books printed. Each production location has its own specialty, which optimizes cost-efficiency. New Energy Printing also buys in bulk, creating a cost advantage that we pass on to our customers.
