Which files do I need to submit?
The required files differ for softcover and hardcover books.
Softcover book
For a softcover book, please provide:
- Interior: as a PDF (single pages)
- Cover: as a PDF (one spread containing the front, spine, and back)
Are you opting for a special finish? Please submit this as a separate file. Instructions can be found at the bottom of the following pages:
💡 To design the cover, we will send you the exact spine width. This is calculated based on the number of pages and your chosen paper type.
Hardcover book
For a hardcover book, please provide:
- Interior: as a PDF (single pages)
- Cover: designed according to our template (layout guide)
If applicable, please also provide:
💡 For hardcover books, you will always receive a template (layout guide). This template includes all technical dimensions, such as the spine, hinges, wrap/turn-in, bleed, and safety margins.
If you choose printed endpapers, they must be submitted as a separate PDF file. An endpaper consists of four pages, one of which remains unprinted because it is glued to the inside of the cover.
General Submission Specifications
File Type
Submit your files as a print-ready PDF (preferably PDF/X). This format ensures that fonts, images, and colors are processed correctly during production.

Images
Use images with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi at actual size. This ensures sharp photos and illustrations.
Images from the internet can be used, provided the resolution is high enough and you hold the appropriate usage rights. Always check whether the image is cleared for commercial use and if attribution is required.
Using stock photos or AI-generated images? Always check the provider’s licensing terms. Compliance with copyright and terms of use remains the sole responsibility of the client.
Bleed
If images or color blocks extend to the edge of the page, add a 3 mm bleed all around the document.
It is crucial that images and color blocks actually extend into this bleed area. Simply adding 3 mm of white space without extending the artwork is not sufficient and can result in unwanted white borders after cutting.
Colors
Always supply full-color files in CMYK. RGB colors are meant for screens and can cause color shifts during the printing process.
If you are using a PMS (Pantone) color, please keep in mind that PMS is only possible with offset printing.
Rich Black
For regular text, line art, QR codes, and barcodes, always use 100% black (K100).
For large black areas, we recommend using rich black. The exact color values can vary depending on the printing process and the specific printer. Since we work with multiple specialized printing partners, we are happy to advise you on the best color build for your project.
Color Profiles
For digital print runs, we recommend a standard FOGRA color profile. For offset print runs, the preferred color profiles can vary per printer. Because we work with multiple printing facilities, we will gladly advise you on which color profile best suits your production.
Lines and Fine Details
To ensure all details reproduce well, we recommend a minimum line thickness of 0.4 mm for special finishes. This applies to:

Transparency
Are you using transparency in your design? Export your file as a print-ready PDF so that transparencies are flattened and processed correctly during production.
Spine Text
Always place text on the spine of a book at least 2 mm away from the spine edges. This prevents text from ending up too close to the hinge or the edge of the cover.
Crop Marks
Always add crop marks when exporting your PDF. Make sure they are placed outside the bleed area. This allows the print work to be cut precisely without the crop marks being visible in the final product.
Checklist Before Submitting
Before you send your files, please check if:
✓ The files are saved as a print-ready PDF;
✓ Images are at least 300 dpi;
✓ All colors are set to CMYK;
✓ A 3 mm bleed has been added AND images extend fully into the bleed area;
✓ Fonts are embedded or converted to outlines/curves;
✓ The correct spine width or template has been used;
✓ Special finishes are supplied as a separate file;
✓ Crop marks are placed outside the bleed area.
