Embossing is a raised or recessed detail on your book cover. Using a custom metal stamp, a specific area is pressed to create a relief effect—this is what we call embossing. When you run your finger over the cover, you feel a clear difference in height.

Embossing is a raised or recessed detail on your book cover. Using a custom metal stamp, a specific area is pressed to create a relief effect—this is what we call embossing. When you run your finger over the cover, you’ll feel a clear difference in height.

Embossing vs. Debossing
There are two versions of this technique: debossing and embossing.
Debossing presses the design into the cover, creating a lower area.
Embossing raises the design above the surface.

For hardcover books, only debossing is possible. With softcover books, you can choose either embossing or debossing.

Please note: this technique can not be applied to the spine of your book

How to Supply Your Print File

To apply embossing, you will need to provide a separate cover file specifically for the embossed design. This file should be the same size as your main cover file. Use a 100% spot color (any PMS color will do) to indicate the area to be embossed. Based on this file, we will create a custom metal stamp made uniquely for your book. Your graphic designer will usually know exactly how to set up this file. Embossing can also be combined with UV spot or foil stamping for an extra luxurious finish.
