What is a headband?
When printing your book , you will often need to make a range of (sometimes unexpected) decisions. One of those is whether or not to add a headband. This finishing detail is especially relevant for hardcover and sewn softcover books. It is used to give the spine of your book a clean, professional look. You will find it at the top and bottom edges of the spine, where it wraps neatly around the inner book block.
Adding a headband is optional, but it can make a noticeable difference in the overall appearance of your book.
Please note:
For very thin books (with a spine of just a few millimetres), or books with an unusual size, it is not always possible to add a headband. This depends on the binding equipment used during production. As a general guideline, we recommend a minimum spine thickness of 5 mm.
