What is a Softcover Book with Flaps?

A softcover book with flaps, also referred to as a paperback with French flaps or gatefold cover, features a flexible cover made of sturdy paperboard. The difference compared to a standard softcover lies in the additional inside-folded flaps on the front and back covers.
These flaps do not only provide a more luxurious appearance, but they also offer extra space for information such as a company profile, product information, or a call-to-action.

What is the Difference Between a Standard Softcover and a Softcover with Flaps?

A standard softcover features a straight cover without extra additions. With a softcover with flaps, the cover edges are extended and folded inward.

This creates:

  • A more luxurious and sturdy appearance
  • Additional communication space
  • Greater protection for the interior pages

Compared to a hardcover edition, a softcover with flaps also remains significantly lighter and more cost-effective.

Why Choose a Softcover with Flaps?

Having a softcover book with flaps printed is ideal when you wish to combine a professional appearance with flexibility and cost advantages.

The main benefits include:

Luxurious look without high costs – The flaps give your printed materials a premium appearance similar to hardcover books, but at a more affordable rate.
Extra space for content – Use the flaps for branding, product information, or commercial messaging.
Practical and lightweight – Perfect for mailing, trade shows, and direct customer touchpoints.
Greater impact on the reader – A book with flaps feels more complete and is often perceived as high-value.

Perfect Bound or Sewn Binding

In everyday language, a perfect bound book is also known as a glue-bound book. The printed book block (the interior) is glued to the cover, and then the softcover book is cut. This is the most affordable binding option for softcover books.

Alternatively, you can choose a sewn binding, where thread and glue are used to bind the book. This method is slightly more expensive than perfect binding, but it allows the book to open more easily and the binding is stronger. It is ideal for softcover books that will be used frequently, especially when a coated paper type is used.

Would you prefer an OTA binding or Swiss binding? We can also create that for you. We tailor your custom softcover printing exactly to your needs. If you are unsure about what you want, we are happy to offer advice on printing and binding your book.

The Advantages of Softcover Printing with Flaps

Just like standard softcover printing, this option is cost-effective to produce. At the same time, flaps allow you to add significant value without major additional costs.

For businesses, this translates to:

  • A strong first impression
  • More space for marketing communication
  • A professional presentation at a competitive price

The exact costs depend on your specific requirements and print run. We are glad to prepare a custom quote for your softcover book with flaps.

How a Softcover with Flaps is Constructed

  • Cover made of sturdy SBS board (typically 240/250 gsm)
  • Front and back covers equipped with flaps (typically 10–12 cm wide)
  • Inside cover engineered for strong spine gluing
  • Outside cover smooth and ideal for high-quality printing
  • Finishing options including matte, gloss, soft-touch, or linen laminate
  • Optional enhancements such as foil stamping, spot UV, or embossing

Is a Softcover Book with Flaps Suitable for Businesses?

Absolutely. Printing a catalog with flaps or a brochure with cover flaps is extremely popular among businesses.

Common applications include:

  • Product catalogs
  • Annual reports
  • Marketing brochures
  • Educational materials
  • Magazines and corporate literature

You combine a professional presentation with an attractive price point—ideal for larger print runs.

Binding Options: Perfect Bound or Thread Sewn

Most softcover books with flaps are perfect bound (glued), which represents the most cost-effective option.

Do you require enhanced durability? Then select thread sewn binding:

  • Stronger binding quality
  • Superior lay-flat capability
  • Ideal for intensive daily use

Alternative binding options such as OTA binding or Swiss binding are naturally also available.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does it cost to print a book?

Printing a book is always a custom process, and the costs vary accordingly. For example, a softcover book can be printed for as little as € 0,68 per copy. Do you want to know what your book might cost? Make an instant quote in our price calculator free of obligation or request a custom quote via our website.

  • What is the delivery time of books?

As you might have guessed… it depends! The delivery time of your book depends on several factors. What are you hoping for in terms of book design? What type of paper or finishing do you want? As a general rule:

    • Hardcover– or softcover books without special binding or finishing can be printed within 3 to 4 weeks. In peak season (sep-dec) this might get longer.
    • Do you have additional preferences? For example foil print, embossing, or UV-Spot finish at an affordable price? Then we can also deliver your books within 3 to 4 weeks.
    • For larger print runs ( over 3,000 copies), it is smart to purchase paper in advance. This helps reduce the costs, delivery time will be around 5 to 6 weeks.

Call us or request a quote and we can give you a better estimate of expected delivery times.

  • How will my books be delivered?

Standard transport is always included in our quote and comprises a single delivery to a single delivery address in the Netherlands or Belgium. For up to six pallets, we deliver using a lorry equipped with a tail lift and a pallet truck. For larger shipments, we usually use a larger lorry.

Would you like to know more about what this means in terms of accessibility, unloading times, collection or delivery in another country? See all the details on our page about standard transport.

  • What can I expect in terms of quality and colorfast printing?

We only print books on modern printing machines, and work exclusively with A-label paper. These standards ensure the highest possible end result for your books. Obviously, colorfast printing is also a high priority. We can produce color proofs to show you the expected color result before the final print run. We do not start the printing process until everyone is satisfied.

  • I have special requirements for my book. What can I expect?

Each book is unique and everyone has their own requirements in terms of specifications, packaging and delivery. Exceptions are our specialty! We have a wide range of different types of machines at our dedicated production locations that are designed to handle exceptions. So we are happy to accept your challenge!

  • Can you help with the layout of the print files?

Yes, we certainly can. Our designers have extensive knowledge in book design and DTP. If you are interested, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss your options and send you a personalized quote.

  • How can your prices be so competative?

If you want to print high-quality books in a cost-effective way, you have to use the right machinery. We have various production locations where we have our books printed. Each production location has its own specialty, which optimizes cost-efficiency. New Energy Printing also buys in bulk, creating a cost advantage that we pass on to our customers.
