What is Foil Stamping?

Foil stamping is a process where heat and pressure are used to transfer a thin layer of foil onto the material. This creates a crisp, durable result that standard printing inks simply cannot achieve.

Foil stamping can be applied to various materials, including:

  • Paper and cardstock
  • Cloth/linen covers
  • Textured and colored paper
  • Hardcover and softcover books
  • Slipcases and clamshell boxes

Because the foil sits directly on top of the material, it delivers a striking visual impact you can see and feel.

Why Choose Foil Stamping?

Foil stamping is one of the most popular special finishes for books and covers.

Key benefits:

  • Luxury look and feel: Gives your print project an exclusive, premium appearance.
  • Eye-catching appeal: Titles, logos, and key details instantly stand out.
  • Durable result: The foil is wear-resistant and retains its quality over time.
  • Great for combining: Pairs perfectly with other finishes like embossing, linen covers, or textured paper.

Available Foil Colors

While gold and silver are the classic choices, there are many more options available, such as:

    • Gold foil
    • Silver foil
    • Copper foil
    • Black foil
    • White foil
    • Various metallic shades

Availability may vary per production run. We are happy to advise you on the best options for your project.

File Preparation

For foil stamping, we require a separate vector file containing only the foil elements alongside your standard print-ready file.
Key Requirements:

  • Supply the foil elements as a separate file matching the dimensions of the layout template.
  • Use 100% of a single spot color (e.g., 100% Black or 100% Magenta).
  • Do not use gradients, halftones, or transparencies.
  • Convert all text to outlines/vector paths.
  • Mind the minimum line thickness and spacing requirements.

Minimum Line Thickness

The minimum line thickness depends on the material chosen:

  • Paper or laminated covers: Minimum line thickness of 0.2 mm
  • Linen, cloth, or textured materials: Minimum line thickness of 0.4 mm

Due to the texture of cloth or linen, fine details may be lost during production. We recommend keeping designs for textured covers slightly bolder than those intended for smooth paper.

Unsure if your artwork is suitable for foil stamping? We are happy to check your files before going into production.
